    Volunteering helps those in need of assistance and the students gain deeper ties within their community. This would be a program that would benefit those on both sides.

On the one hand, it’s easy to see how it can create a sense of Civic duty, forcing the students to confront and recognize the importance of their actions in society. However, it can also be seen as a distraction from extracurricular activities or even from homework, which can have a negative effect on a student’s life and obscure their perspective of the point of it. So it can have it’s positive and negative effects, but I don’t have much of a strong perspective of this question either way. Read Less

However, if American youth have good lives that are unaffected by said factors, than they may be more inclined to find community service worthwhile.
