There are multiple fact checking websites and social media accounts that tackle this issue and I think that helps a lot, specially around elections season. However, I believe that people and institutions that create these fake news should be held accountable because promoting misinformation is electoral intervention and an attack on democracy. If people are not informed, then they cannot make a true choice.
Although I see your point, that too much control on the government’s part can also be a threat, in which the gov. claims anything pro-opposition is “fake news”. Read Less

Not everyone has media literacy skills and may fall victim to the fake news they see. They may even share it with others, further portraying it as true news. Deep fakes and AI generated-softwares can be very dangerous and create more distrust in society, which can create a bigger challenge for the government. It may get tricky in attempting to determine what constitutes “fake news” versus a controversial opinion attempting to be blacklisted. This could also lead to a multitude of issues surrounding free speech and the First Amendment. I think the government does have a responsibility in ensuring that fake news is not posted that threatens national security or a specific individual or group. Read Less

These lies can be detrimental to democracy; however, it is also important to understand the potential for misuse. What would count as fake news and who would determine whether or not to ban or limit these stories? These are important questions. I am also unsure about whether it should be the government’s responsibility. Personally, I feel that a more sensible and practical solution would be to have the news organization themselves determine certain standards about regulation. Or it could be set up by a non-profit or the sector could set up an independent watchdog. Read Less
