The Kaiser Family Foundation was established in 1948 by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and his wife Bess. Originally created to support the Kaiser Permanente health care system, the foundation evolved over time to become an independent national health policy organization. In 1991, under the leadership of Drew Altman, who became president and CEO, the foundation was completely restructured to focus on providing trusted information on national health issues. Today, KFF operates as a non-profit organization and is not associated with Kaiser Permanente or any other health care organization. Headquartered in San Francisco, California, with additional offices in Washington, D.C., KFF is not a traditional news outlet but rather a source of health policy analysis and health journalism. The foundation covers a wide range of health-related topics, including health reform, global health policy, HIV/AIDS, health costs, and the impact of health issues on various populations. KFF produces in-depth research reports, conducts public opinion polls, and creates data visualizations to help explain complex health issues. Through its Kaiser Health News (KHN) program, KFF also produces original journalism on health policy and health care issues. While focused on health, KFF's work often intersects with political, economic, and social issues as they relate to health care and policy. One interesting fact: A unique aspect of the Kaiser Family Foundation is its role in HIV/AIDS education and awareness. In 2004, KFF partnered with Viacom to launch the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning “KNOW HIV/AIDS“ public education campaign. This initiative used the power of popular media to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, reaching millions of people through TV shows, public service announcements, and online content. This campaign demonstrated KFF's innovative approach to public health education, leveraging entertainment media to address critical health issues and reach diverse audiences in ways that traditional health communication methods might not.
