The National Catholic Register was founded on November 8, 1927, by Monsignor Matthew J. Smith of the Archdiocese of Denver. Msgr. Smith's vision was to create a Catholic newspaper with "snap, vigor, courage" that would be loyal to the Church and easy to read. The Register grew from a local Denver publication into a national newspaper, eventually becoming part of a larger network of Catholic publications. Today, the National Catholic Register is owned and operated by EWTN (Eternal Word Television Network), which acquired the newspaper in 2011. Based in Irondale, Alabama, the National Catholic Register covers a wide range of topics including national and international news, Vatican affairs, culture of life issues, education, and arts and entertainment. The Register delivers its content through a biweekly print edition, as well as through its website, email newsletters, and various digital formats. **One interesting fact**: Despite being a relatively young publication when it started, the National Catholic Register quickly grew into a major Catholic news source. At its peak in the 1950s, the Register System of Newspapers, which included the National Catholic Register and its diocesan editions, reached a combined circulation of over 700,000.
