Local 10, formally known as WPLG, was launched in 1957 by John Shepard III, a pioneer in the broadcasting industry and President of the Shepard Broadcasting Service. The station was originally named WPST-TV. In 1969, it was acquired by the Washington Post Company and its name was changed to WPLG as a tribute to Philip L. Graham, the late husband of Katharine Graham, who was then the publisher of the Washington Post.
